How to Protect Your Building Against Fire During the Coronavirus Crisis

With many UK companies closed for business, how will they continue to monitor and manage the risk of fire?

Although the NFCC has indicated that vital safety checks and maintenance will continue during the COVID-19 pandemic, the responsibility remains with facility managers to ensure a suitable and sufficient fire safety plan can still be implemented if the need arises.

The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, have provided the following general information on “statutory testing during COVID-19 shutdown”:

    1. If the premise is closed to all, all tests and checks will have to be suspended until the building is reoccupied.
    2. If the building is closed to the public but employees remain on the premises then routines should continue as normal.
    3. If the building has been closed to both public and employees, but essential management or technician visits are required, a dynamic risk assessment approach must be adopted. This means the perimeter must be checked before entry, the fire panel must be checked for operation/fault, the MOE must be checked for obstruction and final exit.

Fire Evacuation Drills

Evacuation drills will still need to be carried out on at least an annual basis, even if occupancy rates are minimal.

It may be necessary to delay a prearranged drill to a later date in order to avoid mass gatherings and adhere to social distancing regulations. If this is the case, occupants must be reminded to be extra vigilant over this time and evacuation procedures should be reiterated.

Fire Wardens

It is possible that the number of fire wardens on site may be greatly reduced as staff have been encouraged to work from home. If necessary, available fire wardens should be relocated to different areas of the building to provide adequate coverage for an effective clear floor policy.

Fire System Testing and Maintenance

Despite the effect COVID-19 is having on the ability of businesses to operate, it is still crucial that safety, security and compliance is maintained and that decisions about possible amendments to your fire plan must be approached with informed consideration and caution.
